What is the science fair? The 2008 Annual West Liberty Regional Science & Engineering Fair is a competition among grade 6-12 school students to demonstrate quality scientific investigation through exhibits. Its purpose is to encourage young people to develop an active interest in science and engineering and recognize quality scientific investigation in middle and high schools. Who is Eligible? Any student or group of students from the International Science and Engineering Fair approved counties (Jefferson and Belmont in Ohio; Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall, Tyler, and Wetzel in West Virginia). What are the Requirements? Registration for the fair. Additionally, all projects must be accompanied by the appropriate INTEL ISEF forms. All projects require the following forms: Checklist for Adult Sponsor/Safety Assessment form, Research Plan (1A), and Approval form (1B). The Wizard at the forms link: www.societyforscience.org/isef/about/rules_regulations.asp will enable each participant to determine other forms pertinent to the project. West Liberty State College has both an SRC and IRB human subjects committee for projects requiring approval before experimentation can begin. When and Where Will It Be Held? The Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held March 7and 8, 2008, in Arnett Hall on West Liberty's main campus. Students in grades 6 - 12 will compete for category awards, special awards, and an opportunity to go to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, Georgia May 11-16, 2008. The Grand Prize Winners in the Junior Division receive all-expense-paid trips to attend the International Fair as observers. The Senior Division Grand Prize Winners compete for $1.4 million in scholarships and cash prizes at the International Fair. Contact information: WLSC

Information for Every Student & Teacher Scientific Review Committee (SRC) It is absolutely imparitive that all projects involving Human Subjects, Vertebrate Animals, Animal Tissues, Recombinant DNA, Pathogenic Organisms, or Controlled Substances MUST obtain project approval by the SRC prior to starting the project. Failure to obtain prior approval may result in disqualification from SARSEF and ISEF competition. All such projects, no matter how innocuous they may appear, must be submittedto the SRC committee, prior to starting the project, or they may not be qualified for SARSEF competition. Students must use the ISEF forms (www.societyforscience.org). For those who are unsure if they need project approval by the SRC, call Melinda Kreisberg at 304-336-8065 or email: mkreisberg@westliberty.edu. Unacceptable for Display The list at the following link showsitems that
cannot be displayed: Every year we have students bring materials that must be removed by the Display and Safety Committee, often causing tears and/or anger. Please review the list, and wherever possible, use drawings, graphics, and photographs on the display board. Also remember that we have several thousand students, teachers, parents, and general public that come through the displays. If you decide to leave anything of value at the display, it is at your own risk. We try, but it is difficult to police all the exhibits.
